Permanent visas to Brazil can be required under several categories:
Family reunion:
a) Spouse, partners in a common-law union regardless of gender (common law applications and same-sex applications are accepted but must be sent directly to Brazil to the Conselho Nacional de Imigração - Immigration National Council), or a minor dependent of a Brazilian citizen or a Brazilian permanent resident.
b) Ascendants of a Brazilian national or of a Brazilian permanent resident.
c) Siblings of a Brazilian national or of a Brazilian permanent resident, if orphan, single and under 18 years-old.
d) Minor children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren of a Brazilian national or of a Brazilian permanent resident.
Investors:
- Foreign investors with initial transfer of foreign capital equivalent to US$150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand dollars) and an investment plan pre-approved by the Brazilian National Council on Immigration (CMIG). This type of visa (investor) can only be required in Brazil. Please contact us for more information.
Retirement:
- A retired person, sixty (60) years of age or older, accompanied by up to two dependents, and able to transfer monthly, in accordance with the laws of the country of origin, the amount equivalent to US$2,000.

In the case of having two or more dependents, the applicant must be able to transfer the amount equivalent to US$1,000 for each additional dependent.
Workers:
a) Technicians or professionals with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment.
b) Professors, technicians and high level researchers who wish to immigrate to Brazil to undertake research work in an institution of higher learning or of research in science and technology.
c) Administrators, managers or directors hired by a commercial enterprise or civil organization resulting from foreign investment described in item 2 (investors) above, with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment.
This type of visa (workers) can only be required in Brazil. Please contact us for more information.
The most common application is under family reunion, which is detailed below. For the other types of applications, please send us an email with your questions.
FAMILY REUNION:
The process is done in two parts: the first one envolves the approval from Brasil and, after that, the applicant will be requested to bring his/her original passport for the visa issuance.
Part A - Documents required from the applicant:
1) Notarized photocopy of passport (*):
- Valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date.
- With at least two blank pages available.

The visa form delivery receipt, which has the protocol page (with bar code) must be printed and signed and presented at the Consulate along with the necessary documentation listed here.

**If
you try to acess the online application form and you receive a security
warning, please be advised that the website you are redirected to is a
secure website. The security certificate is issued by the Brazilian
governmental company responsible for the software used by the Brazilian
Government. You can just click OK or continue to this website to acess
the visa online forms.
3) 1 (one) photo 2x2" inches:
- White background, front face.
- Scanned pictures are not accepted.
4) Brazilian Marriage Certificate (if sponsored by spouse) or Brazilian Birth Certificate and proof of blood relationship (if sponsored by parent, grandparent, sibling or offspring):
5) Police clearance letter from RCMP or local police department:
- For applicants for are 18 years-old or more.
- It must be issued within the last 3 (three) months.
6) Proof of residence within the Consulate's jurisdiction for the last 12 months (utility bill, driver's licence, etc).
7) If the applicant is financially responsible for the family:
Proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil, if the applicant is head of family, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary.
Affidavit letter from a direct family member (not the sponsor) residing in Brazil assuming financial responsibility for the applicant.
- All supporting documentation not originated in Brazil must be legalized by the Consulate General of Brazil.
- Copies of Brazilian supporting documents produced in Brazil must be notarized the a Notary Public (cartório) in Brazil.
- Copies of personal Brazilian documents can be authenticated in a Brazilian "Cartório" or at the Consulate General, provided the original document is send together.
Part B - Documents required from the sponsor:
1) Brazilian ID card: simple photocopy.
2) CIC or CPF card (issued by the Brazilian Revenue Service): simple photocopy
3) Voter identification card (not applicable if the sponsor is not a Brazilian citizen): simple photocopy
4) Income tax forms to the Brazilian Revenue Service or proof of exemption: Please provide with the latest submission.
5) Proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil if the sponsor is the head of the family, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary.
6) Legalized affidavit pledging to provide support and livehood to applicant while in Brazil.
The documents will be submitted to the Brazilian Immigration Council for processing. After the Consulate General in Vancouver has been authorized to issue the visa, the applicant must submit his/her original passport and pay the required visa fee.
- All supporting
documentation not originated in Brazil must be legalized by the
Consulate General of Brazil.
- Copies of Brazilian
supporting documents produced in Brazil must be notarized the a Notary
Public (cartório) in Brazil.

FEES:
- CAD$250.00

U.S. citizens: Add CAD$175.00 to the visa fee.
The administrative fee is applied in reciprocity for similar fee
charged by U.S. authorities.
- Handling fee for
applications sent by mail or third party (refer below): CAD$25.00

CAD$25.00 - Legalization of documents, when applicable
- CAD$6.25 - Authentication of copies, when applicable
APPLICATIONS BY MAIL:
- Add CAD$25.00 for handling, per person, if application is submitted through a third party or by mail.
- If you submit your application by mail, please note that you have to provide a prepaid and self-addressed envelope for return. Only Canada Post (Xpresspost or Priority Courier) envelopes will be accepted.
- The interested party will be entirely responsible for choosing one of the mentioned services. The use of any other express courier companies will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Make sure you have both tracking numbers for your own control. Due to the large number of documents received everyday, the Consulate is unable to verify the arrival of any application.
- The Consulate General is not responsible for delayed, lost, damaged or stolen mail.
FORMS OF PAYMENT:
- Money order or certified cheque only.
- Payable to the order of the “Consulate General of Brazil”.
- The Consulate does not accept payments in cash, personal cheque or debit/ credit cards.
NOTE:
- When applicable, the Consulate General reserves the right to interview the candidate for a visa.
- Visa requirements and fees are subject to change without notice.
- Documents submitted will be kept on file. Unless required, please provide us with photocopies.
INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
