Due
to the high number of applications received, the Consulate-General does
not confirm the receipt of documents neither checks the status of any
process over the phone or email.

The Consulate-General of Brazil in Vancouver issues certificates only for marriages that have taken place in one of the following Provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
- Marriages take had taken place outside Canada can only be registered if the the original marriage certificate has been previously legalized by the Brazilian Consular office in the country of the marriage.
- The local law concerning marital pre-nuptial agreements for marriages abroad also applies. If no marital pre-nuptial agreement has been signed and recognized by the local institutions, the Brazilian Civil Code will apply.
- The name the wife will adopt after the marriage must be informed upon application. According the Brazilian legislation, first names cannot be excluded.
- To produce legal effects in Brazil, the marriage certificate issued in this Consulate-General needs to be registered at the “Cartório do 1° Ofício de Registro Civil” (civil registry office), in the city where the interested party has a legal domicile in Brazil.
- In the case of not having a legal domicile, the registy must be done at the civil registry office in Brasília, DF. (”Cartório do 1° Ofício de Registro Civil do Distrito Federal”).
REQUIREMENTS:
- The applicant who declares the marriage must be a Brazilian national.
- The applicant must be present to sign the Register Letter at the Consulate-General, upon processing the marriage certificate.
- Marriage Registration Form, duly completed and signed.
- Original and a photocopy of the official marriage certificate (called "large form" or "long form") issued by the Vital Statistics.
- Original and a photocopy of the Brazilian Identity Card OR the Brazilian birth certificate.
- Original and a photocopy of a valid Brazilian passport.
- Original and a photocopy of the foreign spouse's birth certificate, with the parents name.

Original and a photocopy of the Divorce Certificate, when applicable:
- If the divorce has taken place in Brazil, he/she must present the Brazilian judicial divorce decision.
- If the divorce has taken place abroad, he/she must present the foreign judicial divorce decision, duly recognized by the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice (Superior Tribunal de Justiça).
FEE:
- Marriage Certificate: CAD$25.00
- Additional copy of the marriage certificate: CAD$6.25
FORMS OF PAYMENT:
- Must be paid by money order or certified cheque only
- Payable to the "Consulate-General of Brazil".
- The Consulate does not accept payments in cash, personal cheques or debit/ credit cards.
RE-ISSUANCE OF THE CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE:
- The Consulate-General in Vancouver re-issues only the marriage certificates that have been previously registered at this Consulate.

- For other cases, the interested party must apply for a copy at the Brazilian Consular office which the original document.
- The fee for a copy of the marriage certificate is CAD$6.25, which must be paid by money order or certified cheque only, payable to the "Consulate-General of Brazil".
- The Consulate does not accept payments in cash, personal cheques or debit/ credit cards.
MAILING THE APPLICATION:
- The application can be submitted by mail to the Consulate-General. However, the applicants must come in person to sign the Registry Book upon processing the the marriage certificate.
- Make sure to have the application and all documents required. Incomplete applications will be automatically returned, if a pre-paid envelope has been provided, otherwise will be kept until claimed by the applicant.
- Make sure you have both tracking numbers for your own control. Due to the large number of documents received everyday, the Consulate is unable to confirm the arrival of any application.
- The Consulate-General is not responsible for lost, stolen or delayed mail.
GETTING MARRIED IN BRAZIL:

For civil wedding that are taking place in Brazil, is advisable that the Brazilian part check with the Civil Registry office responsible for his/her city regarding which documents will be necessary, as this might differs from city to city.
