Due
to the high number of applications received, the Consulate-General does
not confirm the receipt of documents neither checks the status of any
process over the phone or email.
- The foreign judicial decision of divorce resulting from a marriage between Brazilian citizens or between a Brazilian citizen and a foreigner must be registered in Brazil at the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice ("Superior Tribunal da Justiça"), even if the marriage certificate has never been issued in Brazil.
- Only after that a new marriage certificate can be issued. In order obtain the legal ratification (homologação), the following procedure applies:

The interested party needs a lawyer in Brazil to forward the request to the Brazilian Court of Justice. The request must include:
- The power of attorney for the lawyer.
- The foreign judicial divorce certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Vancouver.
- The original marriage certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Vancouver.
If possible, a statement of agreement, signed by the former spouse and notarized by a notary public.
- Any foreign document that is not written in Portuguese must be translated by a certified translator in Brazil.
